Preservation and the Enhancement of History

The Association for the Preservation of the Las Vegas Mormon Fort was formed in 1974 with the mission of preserving and interpreting the Old Fort.  In 1976 the Association became the Preservation Association of Clark County, and Friends of the Fort was formed to focus primarily on the Old Fort.

Finally in 1991, years of efforts to preserve the Old Fort were rewarded when ownership of the property was transferred to Nevada State Parks which is charged with preserving and protecting the site for the education and enjoyment of this and future generations.

For many years, efforts have been underway to protect and preserve this site, which has such historical significance in the history of southern Nevada.  Under the leadership of the Nevada State Parks and  Friends of the Fort, the site is in the process of being restored to it's earlier appearance.  Some structures and features are original, while others have been reconstructed using the best archeological and historical data available.

Through educational and interpretational programs, the public will know the historical significance of this site to early Las Vegas.  The Friends of the Fort will sponsor and organize:

  • Docent Program
  • Historical re-enactments
  • Living Histories
  • Chautauquas
  • Lecture Series
The Friends of the Fort also seeks to support research efforts to help further establish the Fort's role through writing grants and creating proposals for programs and research.  Come learn about the Fort and the part it played in the history of Las Vegas Valley over the past 150 years.
